If the bike frame was manufactured at the Santa Ana CA facility, the first three or four digits of the serial number should be letters abbreviating the model or size of the frame such as “XL”, “XXL”, CR24, or something like that. The next part of the serial number is eight numeric digits. The first four numbers should be a two digit month followed by a two digit year. The last four digits are the serialization digits to depending on what number the frame was of the years production. If the frame was made overseas in Taiwan, it gets more complicated. If the number starts with a K, the frame was made by Kinesis. That’s the only one I remember off the top of my head. There were at least four companies in Taiwan that made the GT lines: Robinson , Dyno , Powerlite and Auburn included The first digit would be a letter designating the factory that made the frame.

Brakes Older Raleigh-made brakes used special cables with moulded ends on both ends of the cables, as shown. These cables are no longer available. They were supplied in different configurations for front, gent’s rear and lady’s rear applications. The cable came with the adjusting barrel. To replace the cable assembly, you would unbolt the adjusting barrel from the caliper.

These cables can often be revived by dripping oil into them and working them back and forth. Later Raleigh-made brakes used standard cables with conventional anchor bolts. Chainguard Braze-ons Older models had a braze-on with a tapped hole on the right chain stay , behind the chainwheel , to secure a full chaincase.

Schwinn Serial Numbers and Date Codes

Tuesday, May 19, Randor Traveller 5 Speed folding bike Hello, I got some masonry work in this week, so not too much to report. I did manage to get the folding bike cleaned up a bit. The top photo is when it first arrived. Look closely and you can see some rust.

Bicycles (except children’s bicycles) are almost always required to have a frame or serial number. Many manufacturers use a date-code as part of the serial number. For example, a Brompton uses YYMMXXX as their serial code, so a Brompton with a serial number of was manufactured in .

The frame was free of rust, and in unusually nice condition for its age. I kept as much as I could of the original Dura Ace components, but I knew that I would replace the wheelset, not wanting to ride on 27 inch 20mm tubulars through downtown Portland. At first, I considered a b conversion as the best option for adapting this bike to my riding style. While possible, this amount of reach is not ideal.

There are brake calipers which have enough reach to accomplish the conversion, but they are not in my constellation of desirable components. Instead, I converted it to c, using the existing anodized Dura Ace calipers, which had plenty of reach for a c wheelset. Mavic Open Pro c rims Campagnolo Record hubs Pasela c 35 mm tires And that wheelset turned out to be one that I had built a while back and which I had used on my old Davidson: Campagnolo Record 36 hole hubs built up on new Mavic Open Pro rims.

The tires are Panasonic Pasela x They have a tread pattern which is different from all other Pasela tires. The big tires on c wheels make for a tall bike, which I noticed throwing a leg over and while riding in its new upright position.

Schwinn – Get Out and Ride a Bike

The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages.

My philosophy of old bikes probably won’t be approved by most purists.

If you want professional, accurate information, instead of amateur guessing, here is where you get it. But the biggest mistake that people make is they listen to DIY’ers and presume they can diagnose their own serial numbers in a snap. And they are usually wrong. It requires a lot of study and at least some expertise. And it is extremely rare that a model number or a serial number was used for one year and one year only.

And forget “using the Schwinn format” or going by the name that is on the bicycle. Here is a typical question we get: Who made it and when was it made? There were at least two dozen different companies that made bicycles and trikes badged “Western Flyer. Any ID on that basis alone is sheer nonsense. This is just one reason why we have to SEE what you may have. At least THEN we know where to start looking.

Old Huffy bicycles any good? I am looking at a good condition Huffy ten speed road bike on craigslist and I know that Huffy these days are kinda on the cheap side. Would this be a good enough bike for a pound cyclist trying to lose weight? That being the case, the problem with heavy people and cheap bikes tends to be the wheels rather than the frame itself, and then the gearing and brakes tend to be crap regardless of the weight of the rider.

Generally the year and month of build was stamped as the first part of the serial number. The first number 6 relates to the year — It is assumed that the G is the production number. There were a few variations on this type of serial number, but usually they were pretty easy to work out. I spent quite a bit of time looking into these numbers on a few of my bikes as well as checking against other Mongoose BMX owners to see if my serial number crack was right.

It seems to hold up and here it is. Mongoose serial numbers are usually found stamped on the bottom of the bottom bracket. This is not always the case and there will be some bikes that do not fit into this formula. The 3rd letter corresponds to the year of manufacture. The 4th letter corresponds to the year of manufacture and follows on from the mid-school serial numbers.

P is the year , J is the month Oct Please note: The Mongoose serial number will give you the build date of your BMX. Frames were normally manufactured the year before being sold in bike shops.
